We all know the power of visual storytelling, and what better way to engage your audience than with a personalized virtual version of yourself?

Getting Started

Before we dive into the process of creating an AI avatar, make sure you have a Descript account. If you don't have one yet, click on the link in the description of this video to create your free account. With that sorted, let's jump into today's training on how you can create an avatar just like me.

Creating Your Avatar

To begin, log in to your Descript account. Navigate to the option that allows you to create with an AI speaker. If you're starting a new project, whether it's a video or another format, you'll see an option to create with an AI speaker.

Select this option, and you'll see a variety of voices to choose from. While Descript is constantly updating its features, right now, you can't use your own voice just yet. Personally, I went with a male voice named Joshua for this demonstration, but feel free to choose any voice that best fits your needs.

Choosing the Avatar

Now, let's talk visuals. You have the choice to use your own images or select from Descript's library. Although the real images might not look perfect with the current technology—a touch of fading or lip-syncing issues—picking from the library provides great results.

Once you've uploaded or chosen your image, you assign it as your avatar. This is where you get creative by drafting a script for your avatar to say. Using tools like ChatGPT can help generate engaging content, which you then paste into Descript to get your avatar speaking.

Generating the AI Speech

With your avatar ready, click "done writing" to generate AI speech. Remember to keep an eye on your plan limits, as creating avatars uses a portion of your allotted time. With everything set up, it's time to click "generate avatar."

Once the avatar is created, take a look at the result. I was pretty impressed; it’s a fascinating way to convey your message. However, when using personal images, there's definite room for growth. Lip syncing and image stability are areas where we can expect improvements in Descript in the future.
